Unless God Has Given You Express Command to Play
The lottery is a form of gambling—a covetous desire for wealth that God explicitly warns against. "Thou shalt not covet" (Exodus 20:17) is violated every time you buy a ticket hoping for more than what God has given you.
Those who play the lottery are essentially saying, "What God has provided is not enough." This is a direct attack on faith and trust in divine provision.
If God has given you express command to play—meaning He has specifically and unmistakably told you to buy a ticket—then you may obey that leading. This would be an act of obedience, not greed.
But know this: the overwhelming majority of those who play do so out of covetousness, not divine instruction. Test your own heart before claiming divine permission.
"But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19).
If God wants you to be rich, He will provide richly—without you having to buy a ticket. If He has not promised you wealth, then be content with what you have (Hebrews 13:5).
